Madrid, the capital city is a metropolis of over six million people. It derives its name from “Magerit” – “mother of waters”, the name given to the fortress built on the Manzanares river by Muhammad, the Umayyad of Cordoba. The city grew for two hundred years under the Arabs and the old Arab Wall and a few towers survive from those times. The area of “Los Austrias”, the monuments built during the Hapsburg era are typical in their splendor with subdued facades and luxurious interiors. The Royal Palace and many Neoclassical buildings were built in the 18th century. Many museums and art galleries display classical and modern works of art by masters like Goya, Velzquez, Picasso, Dali and Miro. These galleries house a great wealth of artistic heritage. Madrid is also the location of a collection palaces and monuments which are some of the most important heritages of Western history.

Madrid hosts some of the finest Spanish language schools and is a great city to base your edu-travel tour from.
